Lake Talquin

Lake Talquin was created in 1927 when Jackson Bluff Dam was constructed across the Ochlockonee River inundating approximately 10,000 acres of new lake bottom 10 miles west of Tallahassee, Florida. The lake has been a popular largemouth bass fishing venue since. Much of the uplands around the lake are publicly owned and supports a mixed forest that combines with cypress along its entire shoreline. Bird life is rich along Talquin's forested shoreline with ospreys and bald eagles common sights.

Waters of the lake are not as clear as typical of the natural lakes of the area, but Talquin
supports a rich fishery. Bluegills, largemouth bass and black crappie are commonly taken
along with redear, redbreast and warmouth sunfish. The lake also supports a healthy population of the Great Olive-winged Drake (Hexagenia limbata) or the Hex. This is a huge mayfly that can measure two inches from head to tip of tail. The locals call them "willow flies" because they typically land in the willows along the shoreline. Fishing for especially bluegills typically is spectacular both as these large aquatic insects emerge on the surface as adults and then begin drip back to the water surface under the willows where the adults land after breeding.

Fish are taken on dry and historic wet patterns on light fly rods. This is another beautiful venue you will want to add to your list of fly fishing experiences.
